The SittingDuck Podcast (SDP) was launched on August 3rd, 2006. It was amongst the early productions launched on the Podshow (now Mevio) Podcast Delivery Network (PDN) where it remained until early 2011. The podcast is recorded and published from Wellington, New Zealand. For the first three years, the podcast was published every Thursday evening.
It began life as a simple selection of a few songs from the Podsafe Music Network (now Mevio’s Music Alley) and over time gained a little bit of chit-chat when the mood took me. After a while the unstructured talk gave way and the music once more took centre stage.
In June 2008 another podcaster contacted me just to say he was listening. We’ve found a lot of common ground and I have been discussing podcast ideas and music with Brennig Jones of This Reality Podcast ever since. These discussions, and indeed This Reality Podcast, lead me to make the first major change to my format. Episode 121 of the SDP introduced (mostly) regular ‘talkie’ sections. At the same time, the original, white-backed logo was redrawn and remodelled with the current grey background. SDP 2.0 was born, along with the first version of this web site.
The podcast then took a few different turns including an in-between ‘lite’ shown known as the SD3, and the addition of sponsors for a time. On September 29th, 2009 I announced a hiatus from recording and an intended re-invention of the podcast. A small number of podcasts, largely following the old structure, were released over the next 6 months and on April 1st, 2010 a new product was launched – The Sitting Duck Collection. While originally intended to replace the SDP, the SDC became an adjunct and the SDP was cautiously re-birthed once again in infrequent doses.
On August 14th, 2010 the podcast once again resumed approximately weekly recording. It has fallen back to its original formula of plenty of music and some idle chatter. The Sitting Duck Collection, neglected for new content after its launch, will soon begin expanding as time permits. Ah, time – a precious resource.
The latest step in the evolution of the Sitting Duck properties is that as of February 2011, the podcast is no longer hosted on Mevio. I would like to sincerely thank Adam Curry and all those at Mevio for making the PDN. Without it, this podcast would probably not have happened. But time moves on and I have elected to part ways with Mevio for future episodes. As long as Mevio is around, all the original episodes will remain available from their site.
The podcast is back on track with regular Thursday episodes. Long may the music play.
